Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection also known as ICSI, is a fertility treatment that has become a commonly used option for couples experiencing difficulties conceiving. This technique can be helpful in overcoming certain types of male infertility issues, such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or problems with sperm shape. At London IVF and Genetics Centre, we have seen firsthand how ICSI can make a significant difference for couples struggling with fertility challenges. In this post, we will look into some of the key reasons why ICSI might be recommended, and outline who can benefit most from this treatment.

Understanding ICSI Treatment

ICSI is an advanced fertility treatment primarily used to overcome male fertility issues. As a variation of traditional IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation), ICSI involves directly injecting a single sperm into an egg to achieve fertilisation. This technique is especially beneficial for couples where male infertility is a concern, significantly improving the chances of successful conception. ICSI is widely regarded for its precision and effectiveness, making it a key tool in assisted reproductive technologies. Below we breakdown what ICSI typically involves;

Sperm Collection: A sperm sample is obtained, either through ejaculation or surgical extraction if necessary.

Egg Retrieval: The female partner undergoes hormonal stimulation to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved using a minor procedure.

Sperm Injection: A single sperm is carefully selected and directly injected into the cytoplasm of each egg.

Fertilisation Monitoring: The fertilised egg is monitored in a laboratory to ensure it develops into an embryo.

Embryo Transfer: Once the embryo has developed, it is transferred into the female partner’s uterus, where it can implant and grow.

When is ICSI Used?

ICSI is primarily recommended for cases of male infertility, where traditional methods of fertilisation may not succeed. It helps couples overcome specific sperm related issues that prevent natural conception or hamper the effectiveness of conventional IVF. By bypassing natural barriers to fertilisation, ICSI opens up new possibilities for many couples who might otherwise struggle to conceive. Some of the main fertility issues that lead to the use of ICSI include;

Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia): Men with significantly low sperm counts may not produce enough sperm to achieve fertilisation naturally. In such cases, ICSI enables fertility specialists to select a single, healthy sperm for injection into the egg, greatly improving the chances of conception.

Poor Sperm Motility (Asthenozoospermia): When sperm have difficulty moving or swimming towards the egg, ICSI eliminates the need for sperm to travel, ensuring that fertilisation can still take place by injecting sperm directly into the egg.

Abnormal Sperm Morphology (Teratozoospermia): Men with a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm often struggle to conceive naturally. ICSI allows specialists to select the most viable sperm, improving the chances of successful fertilisation despite sperm shape abnormalities.

Benefits of ICSI for Male Infertility

ICSI offers several benefits for couples facing male infertility challenges. This advanced treatment has become a crucial factor in overcoming male fertility issues that previously limited the chances of conception. By directly injecting a single sperm into the egg, ICSI addresses specific obstacles related to sperm quality and quantity. Below we discuss some key benefits of ICSI for male infertility;

Overcoming Severe Male Fertility Issues

ICSI is highly effective for men with severe fertility problems such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology. In these cases, traditional methods of fertilisation may not work as the sperm may struggle to reach or penetrate the egg. ICSI bypasses these natural barriers by allowing fertility specialists to choose a healthy sperm and directly inject it into the egg, significantly increasing the chances of fertilisation.

Minimising the Impact of Sperm Quality

ICSI also reduces the effects of poor sperm quality. Whether the sperm has issues with movement, shape, or count, ICSI allows specialists to choose the most viable sperm for fertilisation. This precise method means that even if a man has poor sperm quality, the chance of a successful pregnancy is greatly improved, offering couples hope who might otherwise face significant challenges.

Enabling Conception with Minimal Sperm

ICSI is particularly beneficial for men with conditions like azoospermia, where sperm is either absent or needs to be surgically retrieved from the testes or epididymis. Even in situations where only a few sperm are available, ICSI can make fertilisation possible. This breakthrough means that males who once faced limited options due to extremely low sperm production can still have the opportunity to father a biological child.

Maximising your Chances of a Successful Pregnancy

At London IVF and Genetics Centre, we are a private fertility clinic with locations in both London and Milton Keynes, we provide a comprehensive range of advanced fertility treatments. Male infertility is often a significant contributor to conception difficulties, and we utilise ICSI in approximately one third of our patients experiencing male factor infertility.

Before moving forward with any advanced fertility treatments, we conduct thorough male fertility testing to evaluate key factors such as sperm concentration, motility, morphology, and the presence of anti sperm antibodies. Based on these detailed results, if ICSI is deemed the right approach, we include it as part of a personalised treatment plan tailored to you and your partner. We also offer a range of other advanced fertility treatments such as IVF, ensuring that there are options to suit you and your needs.

At London IVF and Genetics Centre we are committed to working closely with you through your fertility journey, allowing you to make informed decisions throughout the process. To learn more about ICSI or to schedule a private and confidential consultation, contact our team and we will be happy to assist you.

IVF has transformed the journey to parenthood for millions of couples worldwide struggling with fertility issues, helping them make their dream of having a family a reality. This fertility treatment involves several key stages, each designed to support the development of a viable embryo. While the entire IVF journey can seem complex, many couples are especially curious about the embryo transfer stage. For those considering the IVF journey, understanding each stage can bring both clarity and comfort. We are committed to guiding you through every aspect of the IVF process. In this blog, we’ll explore IVF, discuss who may benefit most from this treatment, and take a closer look at the embryo transfer stage.

What is IVF?

IVF, in vitro fertilisation, is an advanced fertility treatment designed to help couples who are facing fertility challenges. It involves stimulating a woman’s ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving those eggs, and fertilising them with sperm in a controlled laboratory setting. Once fertilised, the resulting embryos are monitored for development, with the best quality embryo being chosen for transfer into the uterus, where it implants and leads to a successful pregnancy.

With its ability to tackle a number of infertility issues, IVF has become one of the most widely used and effective fertility treatments available. It can be suitable for a range of people, from couples facing specific medical challenges to individuals and same sex couples looking for assistance in starting their families. Below are some common reasons why IVF may be considered a suitable path to parenthood;

Blocked or Damaged Fallopian Tubes

Women with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes can often be recommended for IVF. When the fallopian tubes are obstructed, it prevents the egg and sperm from meeting naturally, making conception unlikely without medical intervention. IVF bypasses the need for functioning fallopian tubes by creating the conditions for fertilisation in a controlled environment outside of the body, allowing the embryo to develop before being placed directly into the uterus. For those facing this issue, IVF offers an effective solution.

Male Infertility

IVF is also a common choice when dealing with male fertility issues, such as low sperm count, poor motility, or irregularities in sperm shape that make natural fertilisation challenging. Techniques like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be used during IVF, where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg to boost the chances of fertilisation. For couples dealing with male infertility, IVF offers a practical approach to achieve fertilisation and increase the likelihood of pregnancy.

Unexplained Infertility

Unexplained infertility is diagnosed when no specific cause of infertility can be identified despite thorough testing. For couples who have spent a significant amount of time trying to conceive naturally without success, IVF offers a structured, scientifically supported method to increase their chances of conception. IVF allows these couples to take a proactive step towards achieving pregnancy, even when the underlying cause of their infertility remains unknown.

The Embryo Transfer Stage of IVF

The embryo transfer stage is a crucial step in the IVF journey, bringing together the prior efforts of egg retrieval, fertilisation, and embryo development. This process involves the precise placement of the prepared embryo(s) into the uterus, where timing and accuracy are essential to support successful implantation. Below is an overview of the embryo transfer process and what it entails;

Choosing the Embryo(s)

The first step in embryo transfer involves choosing the best quality embryo(s) for transfer. Fertility specialists are able to evaluate each embryo’s development, examining aspects like cell structure and growth patterns to identify the embryos with the highest implantation potential. Usually one or two embryos are chosen for transfer to balance the risk of multiple pregnancies with the goal of a successful outcome.

Preparing the Uterus

Preparing the uterus is another critical step in embryo transfer. This may involve ensuring the uterine lining, or endometrium, is sufficiently thick to support embryo implantation. For those undergoing a natural IVF cycle, this occurs with regular ovulation, while a medicated cycle may involve additional hormones to create an ideal environment for the embryo. A well prepared uterine lining plays an important role in the success of implantation.

The Transfer Procedure

The embryo transfer procedure itself involves guiding a soft catheter through the cervix into the uterus, where the embryo is gently released. This usually does not require anaesthesia and is generally painless and straightforward. After the procedure, patients are often advised to rest briefly before going home, and certain physical activities may be limited for a few days to support the embryo’s chance of implantation.

Post Transfer Care and Monitoring

After transfer, patients typically enter the ‘two week wait’, where they are advised to rest, avoid certain activities, and follow any guidelines provided by the clinic. During this time, the embryo will hopefully attach to the uterine lining to start pregnancy. After approximately two weeks, a pregnancy test will be able confirm if implantation has been successful.

Navigate Your Path to Parenthood with IVF

For many couples, conception can be a challenging process, and when natural methods don’t result in pregnancy, exploring fertility treatments becomes a key step. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one such treatment that has helped countless couples worldwide overcome fertility challenges. By directly introducing sperm into the uterus at the most optimal time during ovulation, IUI increases the likelihood of fertilisation, offering a more targeted approach to conception. At the London IVF and Genetics Centre, we offer IUI fertility treatment to help couples increase their chances of pregnancy. In this post, we’ll explain how IUI works and how it can support couples facing challenges in conceiving.

What is IUI?

IUI is a relatively simple fertility treatment designed to increase the chances of conception. This procedure involves placing washed sperm from a partner or donor directly into the uterus, closer to where the egg is located. By depositing a higher concentration of healthy, motile sperm near the egg, IUI enhances the chances of fertilisation. While the IUI process may initially seem daunting, we strive to make it as straightforward and clear for future parents as possible. Below, we explain some of the key steps involved in our IUI process so that you can understand how it works and what to expect along the way.

Consultation

The first step in the IUI process is an initial consultation with one of our fertility specialists. During this consultation, we’ll discuss your goals for parenthood, your current difficulties with conception, and any medical history that may be relevant. Whether you’re trying to conceive with a male partner or planning to use donor sperm as a single person, we will tailor an individualised treatment plan that is best suited to your specific needs.

Pre Procedure Testing and Scans

Before proceeding with the IUI treatment, we’ll conduct any necessary fertility tests to ensure that IUI is the right option for you. This might include blood tests, ultrasounds, and semen analysis. If needed, we may recommend fertility medications to stimulate ovulation, as this can help time the IUI procedure to coincide with the release of the egg.

Collection of Semen Sample

On the day of the IUI procedure, if you’re using your partner’s sperm, they will be asked to produce a semen sample. This sample is then ‘washed’ to concentrate healthy, motile sperm, removing any dead or slow moving sperm and other substances that might interfere with fertilisation. If you are using donor sperm, the sample will already be prepared and ready for the procedure.

Placement of Sperm

A few hours after the semen sample is prepared, the IUI procedure itself takes place. This is a minor, outpatient procedure that usually takes only a few minutes. During the procedure, a speculum is used, similar to a Pap smear, to access the uterus. The washed sperm are placed into a thin, flexible plastic catheter, which is then gently inserted into the uterus. After the sperm are placed, you’ll be advised to continue with any prescribed fertility medications if they are part of your treatment plan.

Post IUI Procedure

After the IUI procedure, you’ll wait for approximately a few weeks (as advised by your consultant) before taking a pregnancy test to determine whether the treatment has been successful. If the IUI treatment results in a pregnancy, we will guide you through the next steps to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

If it isn’t successful, we’ll schedule a follow up consultation to discuss advanced fertility treatments or further testing. We work closely with all our patients throughout the process, offering support, guidance, and expert care at every stage of your journey.

Who Can Benefit from IUI?

IUI is a versatile fertility treatment that can benefit a number of individuals and couples including the below;

Couples with sexual dysfunction

Some couples may be faced with erectile dysfunction or vaginismus that may require help with less invasive treatments like IUI. By placing the sperm in the womb, such problems can be easily overcome, without having to go through IVF treatment.

Couples with Mild Male Infertility Issues

IUI is often recommended for couples dealing with mild male infertility, such as low sperm count or poor sperm motility. By placing a higher concentration of healthy sperm directly into the uterus, IUI helps overcome challenges that may prevent sperm from reaching the egg. The washing process also ensures that only the best quality sperm are used, further increasing the chances of successful fertilisation.

Couples with Unexplained Infertility

For some couples, despite regular ovulation and healthy sperm, conception remains elusive, and no clear cause of infertility is identified. This is known as unexplained infertility. IUI can offer these couples a better chance of pregnancy by improving the chances that sperm and egg will meet at the right time, boosting the likelihood of conception without more invasive treatments like IVF.

Women or Same Sex Couples Using Donor Sperm

For single women or same sex couples looking to conceive, IUI is a common and effective option when using donor sperm. The sperm is carefully selected, washed, and placed directly into the uterus to maximise the chances of fertilisation. IUI offers a straightforward and less costly path to parenthood for those who require donor sperm to conceive.

Couples with Cervical Factor Infertility

Some women may have cervical mucus that is either too thick or too hostile for sperm to travel through naturally, making conception difficult. IUI bypasses the cervix entirely, delivering sperm directly into the uterus and overcoming this barrier to conception.

IUI at London IVF and Genetics Centre

Conception challenges can be frustrating and emotionally draining for couples, and while it’s common to focus on female fertility, it’s important to recognise that male fertility issues contribute to a significant amount of these struggles. Many men are unaware that their sperm quality or count could be affecting their ability to conceive.

Male fertility testing offers an effective way to uncover potential problems, providing vital information that can guide the next steps in the fertility journey. At London IVF and Genetics Centre, we help couples to identify and overcome their conception challenges through our range of fertility tests and treatments.

In this post, we’ll outline how male fertility testing can help you understand conception challenges, giving you a well rounded understanding of the importance of this type of testing in your journey to parenthood.

What is a Male Fertility Test?

A male fertility test is a diagnostic process used to evaluate a man’s ability to have a baby by examining different aspects of sperm health. This typically includes testing the sperm count, shape (morphology), and movement (motility), as well as looking at other key characteristics. The aim is to determine if there are any factors that may be hindering the sperm from reaching and fertilising the egg. We provide two male fertility test options; the Comprehensive Basic Male MOT Assessment and the Complete Male Fertility MOT (Andrology) Assessment. Below, we’ll explain both tests in more detail and highlight their key features.

Comprehensive Basic Male MOT Assessment

The Comprehensive Basic Male MOT Assessment is an essential male fertility test that provides a detailed overview of sperm health. This test includes semen sample analysis to assess various sperm parameters such as;

Concentration (sperm count)

Motility (how well the sperm move)

Morphology (the shape and structure of the sperm)

Anti sperm antibodies (MAR test), which can detect antibodies that may prevent sperm from fertilising an egg.

Complete Male Fertility MOT (Andrology) Assessment

The Complete Male Fertility MOT (Andrology) Assessment is a more comprehensive and in depth fertility test that we provide. This assessment includes everything covered in the basic MOT, but also delves deeper into the overall health of the sperm and reproductive system. The additional features of this assessment include;

Assessment of Oxidative Damage – This looks for damage to sperm caused by reactive oxygen species.

Genetic Material Damage Assessment – This examines any damage to the sperm’s DNA.

Screening For Genetic Abnormalities – This helps identify any genetic issues that could impact fertility.

Silent Infection Screening – This checks for infections that may not present symptoms but could still affect sperm health.

Who Can Benefit from a Male Fertility Test?

Male fertility testing is beneficial for men in different situations, particularly for those who have encountered difficulties conceiving, those who plan to start a family in the future, and those who want a clear understanding of their fertility health. Whether you’ve been trying to conceive without success or you want to be proactive about your fertility, testing can help identify any issues early and provide peace of mind.

For Men Who Have Had Difficulty Conceiving

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for over a year without success, a male fertility test can be a crucial step in uncovering potential fertility issues. Common problems like low sperm count or poor sperm motility may be affecting your ability to conceive. Identifying these issues early allows you to explore treatment options, including lifestyle changes or fertility treatments, to increase your chances of success.

For Men Planning to Start a Family in the Future

Even if you haven’t yet begun trying for a baby but plan to in the near future, male fertility testing can be a proactive way to ensure there are no hidden issues that could affect your ability to conceive when the time comes. This type of testing provides a clear understanding of your reproductive health, allowing you to address any potential problems in advance and helping you prepare for a smoother journey to parenthood.

For Men Seeking a Clear Understanding of Their Fertility Health

For men who simply want to understand their fertility status, male fertility testing offers valuable insights. Whether you’re curious about your sperm health or want to confirm that there are no underlying issues, this test gives you a detailed overview of your reproductive health. Knowing where you stand can provide peace of mind and help you make informed decisions about family planning when the time is right.

The Next Steps Post Male Fertility Testing

After male fertility testing, the next steps depend primarily on your results. If no fertility issues are found but you’re still struggling to conceive, it may be worth exploring female fertility testing to uncover any potential issues affecting your partner. If your male fertility test indicates a problem, we can guide you through lifestyle changes, medications or supplements, and discuss fertility treatments. Whatever the outcome, we will work with you to develop a tailored fertility plan, helping you and your partner move forward confidently in your journey to parenthood.

By working with a specialist fertility clinic like London IVF and Genetics Centre, you can understand your male fertility and take actionable steps toward achieving pregnancy through male fertility testing and tailored fertility treatments.

In our opinion, the best way for you to ease the stress and frustration of conception is to complete a number of fertility tests. Fertility tests allow you to get a full picture of what’s going on below the surface, something that most people aren’t aware of until they start trying to conceive. This knowledge can take a lot of the pressure off conceiving, allowing you to actually enjoy this potentially amazing time in your life.

One of the most important tests that we offer here at London IVF and Genetics Centre is the ovarian reserve test. We offer this to every couple we work with, no matter what issues you might be facing. Ovarian reserve testing offers us a clear indication of the number of eggs that you have in your ovaries.

Every woman is born with a finite number of eggs, though they usually only reach maturity one at a time during adolescence and adulthood. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all of these eggs are healthy enough to be fertilised but it allows us to make a plan with you to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

How Do We Do this?

We complete our ovarian reserve testing by measuring the amount of Anti-Mullerian Hormone in your blood. This is a particular hormone that is produced by the follicles that contain all your immature eggs. As a result, the levels of the Anti-Mullerian Hormone will depend on the number of eggs you have in your ovaries, with a lower level meaning that there are fewer eggs available. We will also measure follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and antral follicle count (AFC).

We can perform this test at any time and it will be a routine part of your fertility MOT at our centre. It will only take a few moments and once we get the results back, you can sit down with our doctors to discuss your next steps. We’ll talk to you about the options that you have available to you and make recommendations depending on what your results say.

What Does this Test Actually Tell us?

It is so important to remember that this test won’t actually predict your chances of pregnancy. The number of eggs that you have left doesn’t answer any of the other questions revolving around egg health and quality. It will only measure the number of eggs that you have and often the number of eggs is not the big issue that couples face when it comes to healthy conception.

For example, after the age of 35, the quality of your eggs will start to decrease, making it increasingly more difficult to conceive naturally. Even if you still have a lot of eggs, it is not the number that impacts your chances of being pregnant, it’s the egg health.

Our team of doctors would be happy to talk you through other issues as well, working with your age, lifestyle and health to ensure that you have the best chance to properly conceive. After all, your ovarian reserve testing is only a singular part of a wider testing service that we offer. This full MOT will give you the best indication of egg quality, womb health, and sperm quality, as well as other issues that might impact your chances of a successful pregnancy.

Would you Like to Book an Ovarian Reserve Test?

You’re more than welcome to take your ovarian reserve test in isolation, but you will find that our full fertility MOT is more beneficial for you. The more information that you have, the easier it will be for you to make the right decision for your needs and lifestyle. If you’d like to find out more, you’re more than welcome to contact our team at London IVF today. We can set you on the path to conception success and we are looking forward to helping you every step of the way.

The Most Common Signs of Secondary Infertility

One big fertility issue that we feel isn’t talked about as much as it should be is secondary infertility. This is actually a surprisingly big issue that many couples face but no one seems to be talking about. This is something that our team at London IVF and Genetics Centre would like to change. Infertility comes in all sorts of ways and being prepared for every eventuality can help to battle the loneliness and the stress that often comes with infertility.

What is Secondary Infertility?

Secondary infertility occurs after the conception and may or may not have resulted in the birth of your child. It is often assumed that because you have had one successful pregnancy the second one should be easy. This misconception is perpetuated by generally accepted ideas like second labour being faster and easier than first.

The reality is that the human body is not that simple and a first successful pregnancy does not necessarily mean the second one will be as easy. Secondary infertility can still be just as painful, even though you already have been pregnant at least once. And, while the name secondary infertility suggests that you’re trying to conceive your second child, it can occur at any point during your family-building process.

What Causes Secondary Infertility?

There are all sorts of causes of secondary infertility for both men and women, and any one of them can be the cause of the infertility you may be facing. Issues like advanced maternal age, damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis and other similar conditions, impaired sperm production or issues with your lifestyle, can all be responsible for causing secondary infertility.

The best way for you to get to the bottom of the problems that you’re facing is to have a full fertility test and a consultation with a fertility specialist. This will ensure that you have a good picture of what’s going on below the surface, offering you the opportunity to take the right next steps for you.

No matter what infertility issues you might be facing, our team is here to help and support you on your journey, whether you’re trying for your second child or your fifth.

What are the Signs that you Have Secondary Infertility?

It can take a while to realise that you’re struggling with secondary infertility, particularly if you don’t know that exists. Having one or more children can be a challenge for some, and it can be difficult to do the same sort of effort each time, like tracking your ovulation and menstrual cycle, as you did before you were pregnant. For some couples, it can be months before they notice something is wrong.

But if you’re starting to wonder if something isn’t quite right and you’re looking for some common signs to look out for, then there are a few. The biggest sign that you’re struggling with secondary infertility is simply that you have not fallen pregnant or been able to carry a baby to term, despite previous success. This is pretty clear and if you’ve been trying for some time with no success, then you want to get in touch with our team about secondary infertility testing.

Other signs can be things like missed periods or other similar issues that are reflective of a hormonal imbalance or something else being not quite right in the body. Sometimes secondary infertility can be a sign of a far bigger and more serious concern, and it should be taken seriously. Chronic pain in the uterine area or particularly heavy periods can also be a sign that something isn’t quite right and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with checking things out.

Book an Appointment at a Fertility Clinic

If you’d like to book in for a test or two to check for secondary infertility, then don’t hesitate to contact our offices today. Our team is fast working and professional, and will be able to get you the answers that you’re looking for.

When to Book a Fertility Test: Key Considerations

As a leading fertility clinic in London, our clients often turn to us after a long struggle to conceive. Our team can help to provide the answers that clients are searching for, helping them to identify issues and create a plan to overcome them. But we would recommend contacting us early on in your fertility journey. Booking fertility testing before you even start attempting to conceive can save you a lot of stress and frustration, making the entire process as straightforward as possible.

Why Should you Consider Fertility Testing?

Without fertility testing, there is no way to know exactly how prepared you are to conceive. You and your partner could suffer from a number of issues. Many issues with fertility are invisible until you start your journey to parenthood, as they don’t impact your standard of daily living. Issues like blocked fallopian tubes, an inhospitable womb environment, poor egg quality, poor sperm quality, low sperm count, and so on. Knowing about these issues demystifies the entire conception process and can provide some much needed peace of mind.

What Exactly is Tested?

We offer specific fertility tests at our London and Milton Keynes clinics for both men and women, as both are just as likely to be responsible for infertility. Ultrasound scans and blood tests will help to reveal any problems you might be facing. Issues like polyps, fibroids, cysts and other problems can be found during ultrasound scans, while blood tests reveal hormone imbalances and issues with the ovarian reserves. Our fertility tests for men will also involve testing the health and quantity of sperm, to ensure that the egg will actually be fertilised.

When you’re Planning on Trying

As we said, starting your journey to parenthood with a fertility test in our London clinic will help you to understand the best course of action for you and your partner. We’d recommend that both heterosexual and same-sex couples undergo fertility testing to make sure that, no matter what the plan might be to go forward, you have the best chance of conception. We cannot emphasise enough just how much peace of mind and confidence we can offer you through our fertility tests.

If you’re Considering Delaying Conception

While we often welcome couples to our London or Milton Keynes clinic, we are increasingly working with women who are looking into delaying having a baby for a few years. The improvement of medical care and fertility treatments allow for safe successful pregnancies to happen later in life, which is an option for both single women and couples looking to delay conception without risking infertility.

Once we’ve run the tests, we can also arrange for you to collect and freeze your eggs for future fertilisation. This helps you to avoid egg deterioration and offer you more years for potential fertility in the future.

When you Want to Check on a Known Problem

While most fertility issues are invisible until you try conceiving, there are a few things that many of our clients are aware of. For example, both PCOS and Endometriosis are known to have an impact on fertility and they can be checked on during fertility testing. Keeping an eye on known problems can help you make future plans and adjustments to your current lifestyle to keep you comfortable and healthy.

Booking your Fertility Test

No matter where you are in your journey to parenthood, now is always a good time to invest in fertility testing. You can undergo fertility testing at our London IVF and Genetics Centre in London or in Milton Keynes at a time that suits you. Feel free to get in touch with our team by calling us at 0207 580 0207 from London or 01908 915151 if you are based in Milton Keynes.

IVF Success Rates: What They Mean for You

IVF is a big step in any fertility journey. It is, in many ways, the final frontier of fertility treatments, the most invasive and complicated treatment available at our clinics. But the reason that it’s so invasive and complicated is because it is overcoming a number of obstacles that many people face when it comes to fertility and conception. This is why so many clients end up turning to IVF to make their family dreams come true. However, it is a serious investment. So the question is often raised; what are the chances of success with IVF and is it worth the investment?

What is IVF?

IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilisation, which refers to the way that the egg is fertilised in a lab. There are two main forms of IVF, one that removes a singular egg, fertilising it, and returning it to the womb and one that artificially matures multiple eggs, removing all of them, fertilising them, and freezing the ones that aren’t returned to the womb.

This particular treatment helps to overcome issues like poor sperm health, inconsistent egg release, blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, and genetic disorders.

IVF can be exhausting and quite hard on the body.

Over the three to six weeks that the treatment runs, you will be changing and managing your hormones and undergoing a minor surgery. But it is worth it in the end because IVF is one of the most successful fertility treatments available.

Who Undergoes IVF?

IVF is for everyone who is facing barriers to conception, and surveys have shown this to cover predominantly heterosexual couples, now an increasing number of same-sex couples and single parents. Whatever issues you might be facing, IVF is usually the best option for you to successfully conceive and carry the pregnancy to term. Though it’s not suitable for everyone, and it’s best to speak to a fertility expert before embarking on your IVF treatment.

What is the Success Rate of IVF?

The success of IVF depends significantly on the specific circumstances of our individual clients. Age had the biggest impact on the success rate, with the rates halving after the women turn older than 35 and those over the age of 44 have a very significant reduction. This is often why our patients choose to complete multiple cycles, which will boost their chances of having a successful pregnancy.

It’s important to note that these statistics relate directly to the entire process being completed at once. They change quite radically if eggs are collected years before. This ensures that they are the highest quality eggs, increasing the likelihood for successful fertilisation and implantation. The freezing process is completely safe and can actually really boost your chances for success.

It’s important to note that these statistics are described in various ways, and that you are comparing clinics using the same measures. They chances of successful treatment change quite radically if eggs are frozen years before, when natural fertility may be optimum. This ensures that they are the highest quality eggs, increasing the likelihood for successful fertilisation and implantation. The freezing process is completely safe and can actually really boost your chances for success.

Endometriosis vs. PCOS: Key Differences Explained

PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Endometriosis are separate, chronic conditions that affect female reproductive organs. Both of these conditions may well cause infertility and often have painful and unique symptoms that can severely impact your standard of living. While the two have a significant amount of overlap and both attack the reproductive organs, the two are actually very different and require different treatments. Understanding the difference between them is incredibly important, and our team at London IVF and Genetics Centre would like to help with this understanding.

What is PCOS?

PCOS is a hormonal disorder that manifests itself in a number of ways. For example, women with PCOS tend to have infrequent or irregular menstrual cycles, as well as elevated androgen levels (a male hormone) which causes acne and excessive facial and body hair. Another important symptom is the presence of cyst-like follicles on their ovaries hence the name. This is a particular concern because these cysts prevent the release of eggs, which adds to the irregularity of the menstrual cycle and decreases fertility.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus starts to grow on or around the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the inside of the pelvis. Unfortunately, this means that each month, this endometrial tissue starts to break down and bleed. The tissue has no way to exit the body, meaning that those who suffer from endometriosis are bleeding internally, resulting in severe pelvic pain. In addition to this pain during menstruation, there is also pain during intercourse, heavy bleeding in between periods, and infertility caused by scar tissue.

What’s the Difference Between the Two?

The key difference between the two is the cause of the conditions. PCOS is a hormonal problem, while endometriosis is caused by abnormal cell development. This means that both conditions act differently and react to different medicines. PCOS has to be carefully treated because the hormonal changes impact multiple parts of the body. You might want to consult more than just a fertility specialist about your PCOS treatment, as dermatologists, endocrinologists, and dietitians can all help to keep the symptoms of the condition under control.

Endometriosis is predominantly treated through surgery. The removal of these abnormal cells ensures that the uterus is able to receive the fertilised egg and grow with the foetus without concern. This surgery isn’t foolproof, though, as the cells may well grow back, so it’s important to keep an eye on your endometriosis throughout the years.

Both of these conditions can seriously impact fertility, particularly if it’s not properly treated. Unfortunately, society’s general lack of focus on the reproductive health of women, meaning that many ignore the hormonal issues and physical pain, assuming that it’s normal. Often, it’s only when women attempt to conceive that they discover these conditions and this can often be too late to properly combat the concerns.

Even with the best treatment available, it can be difficult to conceive and to carry the pregnancy to term. This doesn’t mean that conception is impossible, simply that it is significantly more difficult and it depends greatly on the progression of the condition and the individual’s lifestyle. Additionally, endometriosis can be overcome using a combination of surgery and specific fertility treatments.

Would you Like Any Further Information?

If you’re looking to manage your PCOS or endometriosis, or if you’re worried about the impact either of these conditions could have on your family planning, then feel free to contact one of our offices today on 0207 580 0207 from London or 01908 915151 if you are based in Milton Keynes. We would be happy to arrange an appointment for you with one of our medical professionals, providing you with the information and the peace of mind you’re looking for.

One of the big discussions surrounding fertility treatments is how much they cost and whether or not they are worth the vast investment often associated with these treatments. We know that it can often feel like the costs can escalate quickly. This is something that we would like to change. Here at London IVF and Genetics Centre, we’re committed to being as transparent and upfront with you as we possibly can and helping uncover the right treatment plan for you. Below we have outlined some of the costs involved with IVF treatment.

How Do We Combat These Concerns?

We think that the best way for us to be transparent with you is to present our costs and pricing structures clearly and upfront. You don’t have to book a consultation to find out our IVF costs because we have them listed on our website. We have clear prices and packages for both our London clinic and Milton Keynes clinic.

We’ve also bundled the costs of fertility treatments together to make it easy for you to get the cost of the whole package upfront. This means that not only do you get the full price, but you also know exactly what is included in all of our packages. This makes it easy for you to start to determine which direction you want to go in with your fertility treatments, keeping IVF costs and processes in mind the entire time.

What Are the Costs Involved?

We have several different IVF packages available through our clinic, each of which offers a different set of benefits and treatments. We want to make sure that you have everything that you need to boost your chances of a successful pregnancy, which is why we’ve packaged all of those little extras together with our IVF costs.

The Basic IVF Package

This is our basic package and it is inclusive of a range of costs associated with IVF treatment. For example, this package includes the hormone treatment monitoring scans, monitoring blood tests, egg retrieval, fertilisation, growth and implantation of the embryo. A lot of highly skilled work goes into completing a cycle of IVF and you should bear this in mind when looking at IVF costs. If you are successful, then it also includes the first pregnancy scan. Additionally, we will suggest preparatory tests for IVF to ensure that you have the best possible chance of a successful pregnancy. This may not form part of the package cost, and you can pay an additional fee to maximise your chances of conceiving. It also doesn’t include the service for freezing embryos though.

The Multi-Cycle IVF

This package is more expensive, however, it includes everything that comes with the basic IVF package for two fresh cycles. Additionally, it also includes blastocyst culture and HFEA fee. It does not include medications and infection screening. This is an ideal choice for anyone who would like to give themselves the best chance of falling pregnant and it is designed for patients under the age of 44. This package also includes a pregnancy scan at 7 weeks for successful treatments and a consultation with one of our professionals should a cycle be unsuccessful. It is important to note that this package does not include the freezing of embryos.

The all-Inclusive IVF package

This includes all what forms part of our basic IVF package, but also includes an infection screening for both partners before the start of the treatment. We also include the HFEA fee and sedation needed for egg retrieval. In addition, we include the costs of any fertility medications that might be used during the process and this is a cost that will be dependent on your circumstances. This package is available for women under the age of 35 who have good ovarian reserves.

Is Anything not Included?

These packages don’t include the initial consultation that you’ll undergo at our clinic. Any work that you might do with us prior to starting your IVF treatment, including ultrasound scans and semen analysis will incur an additional cost. We are happy to give you estimates for these costs by contacting our consultants today.

We hope this post has helped you to consider the costs involved with IVF treatment and what each of our packages entails. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team should you have any further questions regarding IVF costs.
