PGD with HLA screening

PGD with HLA screening is an advanced fertility treatment for couples who may have a child affected with a disease that requires a bone marrow transplant from an HLA-matched donor.

As there is only a 20% chance of a sibling being an HLA match, a more definitive alternative for such couples will be to undergo an IVF treatment.

The treatment offered at our IVF clinic London will involve screening or genetics testing of the created embryos for an HLA match using preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Then, an HLA-matched embryo transfer is done to establish pregnancy that will lead to HLA matched sibling donor. The cord blood from the matched sibling will be collected at birth and will be used for transplantation.

Prior to proceeding with such a treatment, we will screen the couple and the affected child to determine the feasibility of PGD with HLA typing. The technique involved compares the mother’s and father’s DNA to the affected child.

Therefore, it is necessary that both parents are biological parents of the affected child.
